Squirts - Birth Years 1999 and 2000

Softball experience not required.

Schedule

18 game slots, Monday 6pm, Saturday noon.  2 games plus one 90 min practice per week.  Practice day and location depend on coach, field availability.  Additional practices at coaches discretion (i.e., batting cage). Closing tournament is a random draw double knockout playoff in mid- June.  Medals for final tournament winning team and runners up.  Ribbons for participation (and certificate at coach's discretion).  The tournament winner will participate in the Provincial Championships in Vernon July 9-11.   If our total Squirt numbers are less than 60, the team at the provincials can do unlimited pickups.  Rain makeups at coach discretion.

Game Format

Standard softball BC rules for Squirts, i.e, dropped third strike rule suspended, 5 run mercy rule.  Plate umpire subject to availability (the Association is working on this), parents may have to be field umpire. Stealing is allowed except a player on third may not leave third base unless the batter is out of the batters box (safety reasons).  Players leaving while the batter is in the box will be called back to third by their coach.

Tournaments

Discretionary but fun.  VWMSA will pay entry fee for one tournament for any house team.  To participate in tournaments, head coach (or the head coach on paper at least) must have NCCP Community or NCCP Competition Level 1 completion.

Coaching

At this level, VWMSA recommends for the head coach either NCCP Community or NCCP Competition 1 or Competition 2, ball experience or other coaching experience.  The league will generally offer one or more of the NCCP programs pre-season.  Non VWMSA courses may be found at the Softball BC website.

Team size

Prefer 11-14 (depends somewhat on how committed the team is); coach, up to two assistant coaches, manager

Equipment

Required: glove, batting helmet (recommend with cage), mouth guard,  baseball shoes, a 'jill' (groin protector) if catching, knee slider (1).  Teams will be provided with one infield mask for the pitcher.  Optional: batting gloves, infielder mask, bat, sliding shorts.
