Some Memories from Last Season

Wildcats 97 finish third at the 2009 Squirt B Provincial Championships in Prince George and receive the Bronze Medal.

Wildcats 97 finish third at the 2009 Squirt B Provincial Championships in Prince George and receive the Bronze Medal.

We had a very successful tournament - finishing 3rd and received the Bronze medal. The best we could hope for with both Po Co and Abbotsford being by far the best two teams there. We had as tough a draw as you could imagine, which was quickly dubbed the group of death. We started with Guildford Xtreme, 8 am Friday, then Langley Rebels at 2pm. Saturday it was Fleetwood at 8am and then to finish with Po Co at 12 noon. Oakeys on the other hand drew - Prince George, Stars 98, Nanaimo Breakers (went 4 and 0 in the round robin and finished second). Our first game Friday against Xtreme was a head shaker - mercied 20 - 5 in 3 innings - a good thing we had a 2 game break, went back to the hotel to regroup. We came back and mercied Langley Friday afternoon and Fleetwood Saturday morning. Our 12 noon game against Po Co was "the game" of the tournament. We needed to win to be 3 and 1 and they wanted to be 4 - 0. Both teams played a great game, we jumped on out scoring 3 runs in the top of the first with solid hits.

They came back in the next couple of innings to tie and go ahead by 2. We tied them again in the 5th. The game went into the 7th tied and Po Co scored in the bottom of the seventh to win and remain 4 - 0. We finish 2 and 2 and need help to make the play offs. The Invaders gave us that help by dispatching Xtreme at 2pm they went 1 and 3. Langley and Fleetwood, both considered possible playoff teams, went 0 - 4 and 1 and 3. Our first playoff game was 7pm Saturday against, yes, you guessed it, Po Co. Their 1 run victory over us left them short in runs and Oakeys with their easy draw pushed them to third. We lose, one life left going into Sunday. Sunday at 8am goes as predicted. Invaders lose to Abbi and Oakeys lose to Po Co (in a tighter game than expected). We play Invaders at 10 and hold on to win in a slug fest by a run (nothing unusual for a Wildcat, Invader game - I think there may have been 5 or 6, 1 run games between us with the Invaders holding the edge by winning the last 3. We then went on to beat Oakeys by 2 runs in another hard fought game with the winner guaranteed third place. Our third and last game of the day was our third game against Po Co. Our pitcher Anita (98) starting her third back to back game of the day in 28 degree muggy weather pitched a fabulous game. Po Co jumped out to a 6 - 0 lead after 2 innings (2 in the first and 4 in the second). Anita settled down and seemed to get a "second wind" and shut them down for the next 4 innings, allowing us to get back in the game. We unfortunately could only manage 2 runs and so ended a great run. Abbotsford went on to win the gold in what started out as a tight game which got blown open near the end by a towering home run by River (the Abbi catcher). Po Co's extra game and Abbi's rest I'm sure was a factor betweeb these two fairly evenly matched teams.

Results:

First - Abbotsford Outlaws 97
Second Po Co Ravens 97
Third Vancouver Wildcats 97

A great time was had by all!

Beaver Attack in South Surrey!!

Peewee team medals third in a field of fourteen at SSWR tournament.

"I've never seen anything like it.  Where in the #*&@ did they come from?", said local resident Newton Johnson.

Saturday began with a tough final inning one run loss to a strong Ridge Meadows team, on a close call at home plate.  Then, against a determined Port Coquitlam Kaos in the heat of the afternoon, with her grandparents from Japan watching in the stands, Amane "Hammer" launched a rocket grand slam walk off home run right into the adjacent diamond, thereby putting the Kaos in order.  It was Amane's second home run of the game.  Newton Tigers were next in line, and they too put up a strong fight, but the Beavers prevailed, ending the lst day with a 2-1 record.

Sunday morning started with a playoff qualifying battle against another tough Newton team, the Fury.  But the Beavers would not be denied, and finished 4th overall in the qualifying round. In the opening game of the playoffs, the Beavers simply crushed the 5th place Black Diamonds sending them off early under the "Mercy Rule" after piling up a 12-run lead.

The Beavers were rewarded for their efforts by next having to play the well rested lst place team, undefeated Gibsons Slammerz.  The Beavers valiantly held them off for 3 innings and somehow battled to a 2-0 lead, but the Slammerz finally broke out and when the dust settled it was 7-2 for Gibsons.

The final Beavers game was to decide 3rd and 4th place overall.  With medals on the line, the Beavers put their bats to work, while ace pitchers Frances and Saya mowed down opposing batters.  The end result was not close, and the Beavers finished a tough tournament 3rd overall, with bronze medals for all.

The Beavers were added by Saya and Stephanie from the Vancouver Bulldogs, both veterans of the Beavers' 2008 Provincials team, and Chantal from the Vancouver Stingers.

Wildcats 97B win Richmond Tournament

Our Wildcats 97 team competed in the long weekend Squirt B Tournament at London Park, Richmond.  They went through the 4 game round robin with a 3 and 1 record, beating Burnaby Oakeys 3 - 0, Richmond Islanders 98 12 - 5, losing to Guildford Extreme 9 - 5 and finishing on Sunday with a win over Richmond 97 12 - 5.  They entered the 4 team playoff round dispatching the Extreme 9 - 0 in one semi final before moving on to face the undefeated Po Co Ravens in the finals.

The final game was the most exciting game of the tournament, with a number of lead changes, pressure situations and great and not so great plays made by both sides.  Wildcats outlasted the Ravens 11 - 10 in 7 pressure filled innings giving Po Co their first lose of the season.  Every Wildcats player made a positive conribution in the playoff round, either with their bat, their glove or running the bases, truly a team effort and a super victory for our Wildcats 97.

Wildcats pitcher Anita Sengara pitched both playoff victories and was awarded the tournament's MVP.  "Congratulations Team".

The Wildcats Squirt B team attended a Learn to Play session April 29th at McBride fields to help out with the younger girls.
