Team Roles

Coaches

The coaches are role models and the key determinant of whether a child will stay in a sport.  A good coach:

  • is a good teacher, possesses dedication, patience and empathizes with the athletes
  • has the ability to make sound and quick decisions
  • has an understanding of the game of fast pitch softball appropriate to the athletes they coach
  • has the ability to work, manage and communicate well with other coaches, athletes and parents
  • treats athletes, parents, officials, opponents and the game with respect
  • loves what they are doing
  • puts the athletes' long term interests first
Given the heavy commitment of parents who would consider coaching, co-coaching is an alternative to a Head Coach/Assistant Coaches Scenario, having two co-coaches and a reduced number of assistants.

Head Coaches/Co-coaches:

  • lay out realistic goals for the season
  • work with the athletes so they have fun and develop commensurate with their age and ability
  • work effectively with parents and influence them to support their child's experience
  • assume overall responsibility for the organization and running of the team in practices and games
  • attend VWMSA coaches meetings
  • develop their coaching and technical skills
  • prepare practice plans and run organized practices to develop the skill sets and game knowledge of all the players on the team.
  • ensure that a responsible adult is present at all games/practices
  • generally, we discourage coaching more than one team at a time

Assistant Coach(s):

  • support the decisions made by the Head Coach in running the team
  • attend and execute the duties designated by the Head Coach at practices and games
  • provide input to the Head Coach when asked to do so
  • assume the duties of the Head Coach in their absence

Manager:

  • coordinate all team administration including distribution and collection of uniforms and equipment, etc.
  • collect the Uniform Deposit cheques and signed Waiver prior to handing out uniforms.  Players must be fully registered before they are to receive a uniform.
  • responsible for communications from the player/parent to Coach from the team to the VWMSA (game schedules, photos, etc.)
  • arranges and co-ordinates volunteers as scorekeeper(s), field set-up
  • ensure attendance by at least one team representative at VWMSA coaches/managers meetings
  • attend the Coaches Meeting before opening day.
  • complete all required Softball BC forms in consultation with the Secretary
  • Collect the uniform from each parent and return to Uniform Coordinator. Send Uniform Cheque to treasurer for those players whose uniform not returned.
  • Assist team families to identify volunteer opportunities with VWMSA in conjunction with the volunteer coordinator
